The first generation of Audi A3 was launched in 1996 in Europe. This generation was based on the Volkswagen Group A platform. Audi returned to production of smaller cars With Audi A3. Initially the Audi A3 was available only in hatchback body style with 3 doors but 5-door hatchback body style was also launched later in 1999. Audi A3 provided options of front wheel drive and (optional) all-wheel drive.

Dimensions:

  • Wheelbase: 2513 mm (98.9 inches), Quattro 2518 mm (99.1 inch)
  • Length: 4152 mm (163.5 inches)
  • Width: 1735 mm (68.3 inches)
  • Height: 1423 mm (56.0 inches)

  • 1.9 TDI turbocharger diesel engine
  • The all-wheel drive A3 Quattro used either the 110 kW (148 HP, 150 PS) or 130 kW (180 HP, 180 PS) engine
In some countries the brake force distribution, electronic stability control computer of Audi became the standard equipment. In 2003, the first generation of Audi A3 was replaced in Europe, in some markets the model of first generation continued to be sold. In 2006, production of this generation model stopped. The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) rated 3-door hatchback Audi A3 with 4 stars out of 5 in 1998.
